Eye Cataract Surgery Project

The project is being implemented at the Specialized Eye Hospital in Northern Gaza, Palestine, which has been one of the key functioning ophthalmic facilities supporting patients.

The focus is on helping vulnerable patients who cannot afford treatment, especially those affected by conflict and limited health services. The hospital provides specialized outpatient, inpatient, diagnostic, and surgical ophthalmology services, including cataract, retinal, corneal, pediatric, glaucoma, and trauma-related eye surgeries.

Through Phase-1, we were able to support a total of 9,782 beneficiaries, with 13,478 consultations and over 122,562 clinical services provided across outpatient and inpatient care. A total of 1,136 surgeries were conducted across various ophthalmic specializations, including 359 cataract surgeries.

The cost of each surgery is $1,200 CAD

Phase-2 of the project has already begun. In the first two months of the project approximately 519 ophthalmic surgeries across multiple specialties, including cataract, retinal, glaucoma, corneal, pediatric, and oculoplastic procedures. Based on demand, this project can be further extended with RFP support.

Beneficiaries/rightsholders are selected based on medical need and urgency through assessments conducted by the hospital’s ophthalmology teams. The project primarily supports vulnerable conflict-affected populations in Northern Gaza, including low-income patients, elderly individuals at risk of preventable blindness, trauma-related injury cases, as well as children and adults requiring specialized ophthalmic care and surgeries.

Why We Run

In partnership with Islamic Relief Canada, this year's fundraising will support the Eye Cataract Surgery Project at the Specialized Eye Hospital in Northern Gaza, Palestine, as well as Phase 2 of last year's humanitarian response project in Gaza.

This year's support will help provide:

  •  Life-changing cataract surgeries and specialized eye care for vulnerable patients at risk of preventable blindness

  •  Emergency food and health services for families affected by the ongoing crisis

  •  Sponsorship for orphans in desperate need of care and support

  • Basic essentials including clean water, healthcare, shelter, and psychosocial support
