Anti-Palestinian Racism (APR) in Healthcare Panel

Dear colleagues,

Healthcare in Gaza is under attack while healthcare workers on Turtle Island face suspension and retaliation for speaking up against genocide and occupation.

Join Health Workers Alliance for Palestine (HAP) on November 30th at 2 pm EST for an Anti-Palestinian Racism (APR) in Healthcare Panel where we will provide historical context and identify examples of APR in healthcare contexts, understand its impact on patients, providers, and global health and discuss strategies to counter silencing.

The event will be hosted in Toronto and Vancouver, with watch parties coast to coast in Edmonton, Halifax, Hamilton, London, Montreal, and Ottawa.

Guest Speakers:

  • Dr. Hicham Safieddine is an Associate Professor in the Dept of History, UBC and the Canada Research Chair in the History of the Modern Middle East. He is also the co-founder of e-zines Al-Akhbar English and The Legal Agenda’s English Edition.

  • Dania Majid is a housing and human rights lawyer and the founder and president of the Arab Canadian Lawyers Association and the lead author of its 2022 report “Anti-Palestinian Racism: Naming, Framing and Manifestations.” She is the co-founder and artistic director of the Toronto Palestine Film Festival.

  • Dr. Mei-ling Wiedmeyer is a family physician and Clinical Assistant Professor in the University of British Columbia Department of Family Practice. She works at the Umbrella Multicultural Health Co-op, a community health centre providing primary care to refugee, immigrant and migrant populations.

  • Dr. Tarek Loubani is an emergency physician who regularly volunteers in the Gaza Strip and other conflict zones. He is an Associate Professor at Western University and founder of the Glia Project, a medical solidarity organization.

While registration in Toronto and Vancouver is limited to healthcare workers, other watch parties will be open to community members beyond just health workers, if/as capacity permits. We request that you please complete the form and we will reach out to you with confirmation and location.

While entry to the event is free, we will be raising funds for Glia. All proceeds will go towards healthcare needs in Gaza, Palestine.

** please note that each attendee needs to complete the form individually **
